Numerous studies have linked increased levels of cytokines and chemokines to severe COVID-19 and associated mortality, including IL-1β, IL-1ra, IL-2, IL-6, IL7, IL-8, IL-18, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IFN-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP-10), granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and Macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1-α) [19–26].
