SLC16A1 and metabolic disease: The binding of CHC can cause conformational changes of MCT proteins, affect their transport functions, prevent monocarboxylic acid substrates such as lactate from binding to MCT proteins or prevent substrates from transmembrane transport, resulting in intracellular lactate accumulation, changing the acidity of the tumor microenvironment, causing tumor cells to lack energy, oxidative stress and metabolic disorders, and finally causing apoptosis (Kalyanaraman, Cheng, and Hardy, 2022; Payen et al., 2019).
