Similar genes have been previously implicated in malaria response in Hawai'i 'amakihi: several GRB2 binding proteins were differentially expressed at different points throughout the course of infection (Paxton et al. 2023), and Transforming growth factor β receptor III showed sequence divergence and other signals of selection between low‐ and high‐elevation 'amakihi (Cassin‐Sackett, Callicrate, and Fleischer 2019). Here, GRB2 is linked to malaria.
