These findings were consistent with previous reports indicating reduced pAMPK levels in APOE4 brains (Wang C. et al., 2023), and aged APOE4 mice exhibit decreased hippocampal and cortical mitochondrial respiration (Area-Gomez et al., 2020) and reduced brain OXPHOS gene expression (Shang et al., 2020), all of which can contribute to AD pathogenesis (Brinton et al., 2015, Yao et al., 2009).
