SLC5A8 and hypertensive disorder: SCFAs have been found to accumulate in the gut in HTN.48,76,77 The butyrate levels in stool samples were higher in the SHR than those of Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats.48 However, the circulatory level of butyrate was significantly lower in the SHR.48 This finding was associated with a reduction in the expression of butyrate transporter Slc5a8 in the colon.48 In humans, two independent studies reported higher butyrate levels in stool samples from hypertensive patients compared to normotensive controls.76,77 However, the absorption of butyrate has not been studied in humans.
