In this regard, we and others have developed the CD1d-restricted, glycolipid-reactive invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells.21, 22, 23 iNKT cell–based immunotherapy has the major advantage, particularly for pediatric malignancies, of providing a versatile off-the-shelf platform24, 25, 26, 27 that not only lacks the risk of inciting acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD),28,29 but also has inherent antitumor activity against CD1d-expressing tumors that may complement that of the CAR modules. The gene discussed is CD1D; the disease is acute graft versus host disease.
