Since PIEZO1 activation alone is sufficient to nurture this phenotype, it is likely that other biophysical cues in the microenvironment could elicit the appearance of similar cell states; for instance, tissue tension and compression, fluid flow, changing matrix mechanics, etc. Considering how PIEZO1 has been found to influence invasive behaviour in other cancers like breast and prostate, it is imperative that this putative mechanotransduction mechanism in regulating stem cell-like phenotype transitions is evaluated in other solid tumours.
