PCSK9 and atherosclerosis: As a novel lipid-lowering agent recommended by guidelines for adults with hyperlipidemia or at high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) [1,2], proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor (PCSK9i) could reduce serum LDL-C levels by increasing the uptake of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in hepatocytes by inhibiting the degradation of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) in the cell’s surface, which is accelerated by PCSK9 protein [3].
