Cannabidiol (CBD), a selective PXR agonist, induced PXR activation and significantly increased the expression of NPC1L1, MTP, and CD36—three key genes involved in cholesterol uptake—thus promoting intestinal cholesterol absorption and contributing to hypercholesterolemia and macrophage foam cell formation in atherosclerosis [69,70]. This evidence concerns the gene NR1I2 and familial hypercholesterolemia.
