Particularly promising are silibinin and anthocyanins, whose supplementation has provided evidence for their potential use in AMD therapy through inhibition of pathological angiogenesis, the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, and the reduced expression of VEGF and HIF-1α (silibinin), as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, resulting in increased retinal cell integrity and reduced hypoxia- and oxidative-stress-induced damage (anthocyanins). Here, AKT1 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
