Despite the growing population of patients with AD, only the pharmacological options listed below are currently used to treat the symptoms of AD: memantine, a N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist; the cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine; and the combination of memantine–donepezil [3].
