Finally, our experiments demonstrating that both ULK1 deficiency and blockade of p62 S409 phosphorylation lead to impaired control of bacterial replication, together with previous work showing that the small-molecule autophagy inducer A771726 activates the AMPK-ULK1 axis to restrict the intracellular growth of Salmonella (49) reinforce the importance of our data and highlight the potential of ULK1 as a target for future therapeutic approaches to fight infection with intracellular bacteria.
