TAAR1 and schizophrenia: VTA DA neurons from TAAR1 knockout (TAAR1−/−) animals have a dramatically increased spontaneous firing rate compared to those of their wildtype counterparts, suggesting that TAAR1 modulates dopaminergic tone, supporting the potential utility of TAAR1 agonists in hyperdopaminergic disorders such as schizophrenia.12, 13, 14 Despite the dramatic differences in basal dopaminergic tone, TAAR1−/− animals do not exhibit functional differences in motor control, coordination, or spontaneous locomotion.12
