Compelling early evidence for the crucial role of Piezo1 in volume regulation emerged from studies on gain‐of‐function mutations in the PIEZO1 gene, which are associated with reduced erythrocyte volume (dehydration) and haemolytic anaemia, in disorders such as xerocytosis and dehydrated stomatocytosis (Albuisson et al., 2013; Bae et al., 2013). Here, PIEZO1 is linked to non-autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
