A study on nitro-fatty acids (a lipid based therapy) by Hansen et al. (2018) observed that covalent modification of signaling protein stimulator of IFN genes (STING) via nitro-alkylation inhibits the palmitoylation and reduces the STING mediated signaling, a signaling pathway when triggered excessively leads to uncontrolled inflammation and tissue damage in inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Here, STING1 is linked to autoimmune disease.
