Initial laboratory investigations showed an elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) of 237 mg/L, white cell count (WCC) of 14.4x109/L, serum bilirubin of 27 μmol/L, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of 152 U/L, and hyponatremia with a sodium level of 126 mmol/L (see Table 1).
