Enoksen et al. (14) measured baseline serum levels of eGFR, MMP-2, MMP-7 and TIMP-1 in 1,627 subjects without diabetes, kidney, or cardiovascular disease and re-evaluated them after a median of 5.6 years; they found that the profibrotic biomarker sMMP-7 was associated with accelerated GFR decline and increased risk of incident CKD in middle-aged individuals from the general population. The gene discussed is MMP7; the disease is chronic kidney disease.
