Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8, are prominently found in both the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the plasma of ARDS patients (Figure 1) [58], significantly contributing to tissue damage in critical organs and ultimately resulting in MODS [59].
