The interplay between nerves and the immune system in melanoma is also further supported by data showing that melanoma interacts with nociceptor neurons leading to an increased release of the Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) which in turn reduces the cytotoxic activity of CD8+ T cells [84], and by data indicating the onset of a neuron-dependent immunosuppressive environment [41].
