Mitochondria are often targeted for degradation by a process regulated by a sequence of phosphorylation and ubiquitination steps regulated by two genes that have been linked to Parkinson’s disease, PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) and Parkin (Kitada et al., 1998; Narendra et al., 2008). Here, PINK1 is linked to Parkinson disease.
