In CRC cells, circPOFUT1 is overexpressed and functions as a miRNA sponge, specifically sequestering miR-653-5p, normally targeting the 3′UTR of E2F7. This competition increases the quantity of the transcription factor E2F7, which subsequently upregulates downstream targets like WD repeat-containing protein 66 (WDR66) linked to EMT, promoting CRC metastasis and chemoresistance [86]. Here, E2F7 is linked to colorectal carcinoma.
