A related gene, the solute carrier family 11 member 1 gene (SLC11A1), which regulates iron homeostasis in macrophages was found to be differentially expressed between N’Dama and African indicine cattle during trypanosome infection using RNA-seq data [43] and variants of this gene are associated with susceptibility to several infectious diseases, including tuberculosis in cattle [152,153]. Here, SLC11A1 is linked to infectious disease.
