Given further advancements in understanding of the disease, the criteria were refined in 2012 by the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) to include requirement of four features (including at least one immunologic feature) or biopsy-proven lupus nephritis with a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) or anti-double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (anti-DS DNA) titer.
