PSMD1 and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma: Indeed, certain cancer cell types are reliant on high 26:20S ratios for their continued proliferation, and high PSMD1 levels are correlated with a poor survival prognosis in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.80,81 Thus, the development of therapeutic strategies that either deplete 19S lid subunits or dissociate proteasome complexes to decrease the 26:20S ratio could lead to selective arrest and killing of highly proliferative cancer cells and improve patient outcomes.
