ADIPOQ and Obesity: One of the common metabolic disturbances accompanying obesity is MetS, which according to NCEP ATPIII guidelines, is the presence of any of three out of five criteria which include obesity with a waist circumference > 40 inches in males or > 35 inches in females; fasting glucose levels ≥ 100 mg/dL, dyslipidemia with triglycerides (TAG) ≥ 150 mg/dL; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 40 mg/dL in males or < 50 mg/dL in females, hypertension with SBP > 130 mmHg and DBP > 85 mmHg and other criteria such as hyperinsulinemia or insulin resistance, and reduced serum adiponectin levels.
