In PCOS, this oxidative damage—exacerbated by impaired mitochondrial function—reduces the activities of key antioxidant enzymes such as manganese superoxide dismutase, SOD2 and GPx, leading to ROS accumulation and a vicious cycle of mitochondrial dysfunction, energy failure, disrupted oocyte maturation, and impaired steroidogenesis [7,[28], [29], [30]]. Here, SOD2 is linked to polycystic ovary syndrome.
