Furthermore, as it has been shown that omega-3 fatty acids have the ability to act as neurotrophic factors in many neurodegenerative disorders [20, 30–32], dietary omega-3 fatty acids intake might stimulate and modulate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to promote neuronal survival in the retina[16, 20, 33] for protecting against glaucoma.
