NOS2 and cancer: Specifically, pathways regulated by NOS1 (neuronal NOS) (39) were enriched for genes in atherosclerosis (40, 41) and neutrophil extracellular traps (42, 43); genes regulated by NOS2 (inducible NOS) include cell cycle control (44) and inflammatory processes, i. e., hallmarks of the interferon response that induces NOS2 (45); and genes regulated by NOS3 (endothelial NOS) play a role in cancer pathogenesis by promoting angiogenesis (46), atherosclerosis (47, 48), and estrogen-mediated vasoactive signaling (49, 50).
