Regarding the magnesium handling between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, our subgroup analysis showed that diabetic patients treated with SGLT2i had higher medium sMg2+ levels (1.88 vs. 1.69 mg/dL) and a 36% lower prevalence of hypomagnesemia compared to those not receiving these agents (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). This evidence concerns the gene UPF1 and familial primary hypomagnesemia.
