Tang et al. [44] showed that mitochondrial autophagy was induced in renal proximal tubular cells in Pink1 and Prkn single- and double-knockout mouse models of ischaemic AKI ex vivo and in vivo, confirming that mitochondrial autophagy mediated by the PINK1–PARK2 pathway plays a crucial role in mitochondrial quality control, proximal tubular cell survival, and renal function during AKI. Here, PRKN is linked to acute kidney injury.
