Several genome-wide association (GWAS) studies have identified over 240 genes that are associated with IBD.8 The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in rs1893217 present in the non-coding region of the gene protein tyrosine phosphatase type 2 (PTPN2), has been associated with several chronic inflammatory conditions like type 1 diabetes (T1D), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and both subtypes of IBD.9,10 The rs1893217 SNP causes loss of functional activity of PTPN2 protein, also referred to as T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP). This evidence concerns the gene PTPN2 and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
