However, lower basal levels of muscle‐specific IGF‐1 (Freitas et al., 2023), along with a reduced exercise‐induced increase in muscle IGF‐1 gene expression, as seen at least following resistance exercise (Sullivan et al., 2020), in humans with obesity, may contribute to impaired stimulation of muscle protein synthesis seen after exercise in individuals with obesity (Beals et al., 2018). Here, IGF1 is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
