In this respect, at the present time, it is known that the pathology underlying AD is multifactorial (Figure 1), involving the aggregation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides [2,7], the presence of neurofibrillary tangles [7], hyperphosphorylated tau [8], and disruptions in metal ion homeostasis [9].
