The main mechanism of hepatic fat accumulation caused by FTO may involve the over‐expression of Peroxisome Proliferator‐Activated Receptor Alpha, a regulator of fatty acid oxidation, by FTO, which reduces lipid metabolism and promotes lipogenesis in hepatocytes through the FTO/SREBP1c/CIDEC pathway, ultimately leading to NAFLD (Chen et al. 2018; Wei et al. 2022). The gene discussed is SREBF1; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
