In sitosterolemia, dysfunctionalforms of the ABCG5/ABCG8 transporters lead to the accumulation ofplant sterols due to increased absorption coupled with reduced hepatic excretion, subsequently increasing plasma cholesterol levels, which contributes to increasedatherogenesis and complications such as coronary and carotid artery disease(1,2,13). Here, ABCG8 is linked to sitosterolemia.
