Zhang et al. (19), through diabetic mouse models and in vitro experiments, found that diabetes increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), down-regulated antioxidant factors, nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and NAD (P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) expression, and reduced Nrf2 nuclear translocation, thereby leading to more serious oxidative damage to corneal endothelial cells and more obvious corneal edema. This evidence concerns the gene NFE2L2 and diabetes mellitus.
