Results of the mentioned immunohistochemical study confirmed changes in steroid hormone receptor levels inside endometriosis lesions (in stromal and epithelial compartments), increased macrophage abundance (immune activation is associated with endometriosis progression), and reduction of phosphate and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression (PTEN is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis by regulating cell proliferation, survival, and metabolism). Here, PTEN is linked to endometriosis.
