Altered expression of zinc-regulatory genes, such as ZNT and ZIP families, has been linked to obesity and may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, as demonstrated by the reduced expression of ZNT1 and ZNT6 with increasing BMI, mirroring early-stage Alzheimer’s disease changes (Abdollahi et al., 2020; Islam et al., 2023; Olesen et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene SLC30A1 and obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
