The HSV-1 seropositive participants were segregated into two groups: (n = 10 participants per group): (i) HLA-A*02:01 positive, HSV-1-infected ASYMP participants who had never experienced any clinically detectable herpes disease; and (ii) HLA-A*02:01 positive HSV-1-infected SYMP participants with a history of numerous episodes of well-documented recurrent clinical herpes diseases, such as herpetic lid lesions, herpetic conjunctivitis, dendritic or geographic keratitis, stromal keratitis, and iritis consistent with rHSK, with one or more episodes per year for the past 2 years. Here, HLA-A is linked to iritis.
