In Alzheimer’s disease, activated microglia expressing galectin-3 bind to TLR4 (Toll-like receptor 4), MerTK, and TREM2 (triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2), which facilitates amyloid-beta clearance and promotes inflammatory responses associated with the disease [31,32,33]. This evidence concerns the gene TREM2 and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
