Given that increased intramuscular lipids are a known pathological feature of PAD myopathy and contribute to oxidative stress [42,43,44,45,46], the reduced TFRC expression observed specifically in CLI muscle (despite elevated intramuscular HMOX1 in both IC and CLI patients) could represent an important biomarker of enhanced myopathic disease. The gene discussed is TFRC; the disease is peripheral arterial disease.
