Beyond the hotspot contact regions, the EBV BDLF4 region, which is required for efficient expression of viral late lytic genes (Watanabe et al, 2015), connects to the host’s enhancer region, forming loops with the promoter of the human PTEN gene (Fig. EV3A,B), a major tumor suppressor gene involved in miR-BART1-induced tumor metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (Cai et al, 2015).
