Albuminis synthesized in the liver and is the most prevalent plasma protein, comprising up to 60% of the total serum protein concentration. It plays a key role in modulating the pharmacokineticsof various drugs by reversibly binding to them. This binding influences the distribution, metabolism andelimination of drugs, thereby maintaining the pharmacologically activefraction of these substances in circulation. Reduced levels of serum albumin, or hypoalbuminemia, are frequentlyobserved in hospitalized patients. The gene discussed is ALB; the disease is Hypoalbuminemia.
