AIP and pituitary tumor: More recently, a modest increase in the incidence of pituitary tumors was reported in the population of Seveso (Italy), exposed thirty years earlier to intermediate-to-high concentrations of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, a toxic and carcinogenic agent released in an industrial accident in 1976 and known to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, whose interaction with aryl hydrocarbon receptor-interacting protein has been associated with the development of familial pituitary tumors [33,34].
