Classical MCC cells grow as spheroids in suspension and express neuroendocrine markers (CHGA, SYP, ENO2) and Merkel cell markers (KRT20, ATOH1, SOX2) while variant MCC cells adhere in culture and show low or no expression of these markers (43) (Fig. S2A and B). The gene discussed is ENO2; the disease is Merkel cell skin cancer.
