PRSS1 and chronic pancreatitis: Two distinct pathological pathways for chronic pancreatitis have been identified based on PRSS1 variants; the trypsin-dependent pathway in which several PRSS1 variants increase trypsinogen (auto)activation and/or trypsin stability, and the misfolding-dependent pathway in which PRSS1 missense variants induce the formation of misfolded proteins that in turn induce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway [36].
