HES1 and neoplasm: 2007). Hes1, specifically, plays an important role during neuronal development and the development of parts of the digestive tract during embryogenesis, as well as being found to contribute in tumours by ways of maintaining cancer stem cells and aiding metastasis (Shimojo et al. 2011; Kageyama et al. 2007; Liu et al. 2015). The exact molecular interactions of these processes, however, are not yet entirely understood (Kobayashi and Kageyama 2014), making Hes1 interesting for mathematical modelling purposes to investigate potential interactions.
