HMGB1 and adenoviridae infectious disease: Although cytolysis of corneal epithelial cells occurs at late stages of adenovirus infection [93], and this may contribute to total extracellular HMGB1 expression, it is acetylation of HMGB1 that is necessary and responsible for nuclear-to-cytoplasmic translocation and subsequent secretion [55,86,87], and it is acetylated HMGB1 that is proinflammatory.
