They suggest that the association between OLP and hypothyroidism may be linked to an unidentified common immune process; however, this is partly contradicted by the fact that nodular thyroid disorders do not have an autoimmune etiology, although they do present immunological alterations—such as an increased number of dendritic cells, circulating lymphocytes, and inflammatory mediators like IL-6 and TNF-α—which are also involved in the pathogenesis of OLP [9,10].
