Due to the genomic positioning of the miR-218 gene in the intronic regions of SLIT2 and SLIT3 [37], in addition to SLIT2 and SLIT3’s reported roles in other cancers [40,41], DNA methylation of promoter regions of both genes was identified as a mechanism leading to epigenetic silencing of miR-218 expression in NPC [37]. The gene discussed is SLIT2; the disease is nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
