Taken together, we propose a model where the downregulation of SLIT2 and SLIT3 in CRC via promoter hypermethylation ultimately leads to miR-218-5p suppression, lifting the suppression of downstream targets such as BIRC5 and DDX21, amongst other gene targets identified in the current study, thereby promoting tumorigenesis (Figure 7E).
